The Beatles were the best rock band ever. Modern music as we know it would not exist had it not been for the Beatles. Discuss.
Truth: I just added this though to the Ether because I want enough people to comment on it and add other thoughts about the Beatles, just enough so that on the main page, the word Beatles is bigger than Jesus, making the words of John Lennon come true once again.

If they're judged by how influential they are, then yeah, they have to be near the top. But if they're judged in isolation, not accounting for the influence they had on other bands or their popularity, I'd put them in the top tier of bands, but there's probably a thousand other bands that were comparably innovative and talented. Which doesn't diminish the Beatles any, but I think they have a lot of company in their strata of musical merit, and "best" might be difficult to argue.
In hindsight, I don't think I really have any interesting take on the Beatles. 😕
