Sand

There's a problem that seems to make relationships stay incomplete.
It uncomforts and weighs down each time we meet.
We need to tell each other we love if it's true
and if we are being bothered, that needs to be expressed too.

I'm hoping you will have fun today.
I know you don't often get to go away
and have the action you’re supposed to have
that is to go with your work, half and half.

I call you up on the phone
and the silence sounds like you've been so alone.
So I try to keep us talking some
but it never ends up being too fun.

Sometime I'd like to take you out,
like to somewhere that shows what we are really about.
To see your wide-eyed wonder as you look up and down Chicago,
and just give you that exciting sense of being on your own with your closest friends

It scares me to think of how little some people's world has become
when they've had to stay around where they've always been from.
You have to learn how to talk to the world, but
especially to understand what it's unfurled.

Paint me a picture, kid, but not in wet sand.
I'm proud because you're giving me a hand.
